Leverage raises exposure well beyond the amount deposited.
Our review process starts with a single number: the real cost of one standard-lot round-turn on UKOIL. AvaTrade quotes spreads from 0.7 pips with no commission on forex, so that trade costs you roughly USD 7 in spread on a standard lot, nothing more on the ticket. Everything else on this page is the machinery we use to confirm whether that headline number survives contact with a Ugandan account.
What We Actually Check
We do not grade brokers on marketing pages. We grade them on five things that show up on your statement.
- Pricing: spread on UKOIL, commission per lot, swap rates on overnight positions
- Regulation: which entity holds your account, which regulator supervises it
- Funding: how UGX becomes USD, what the conversion costs, how long withdrawal takes
- Platform: MT4, MT5 and cTrader execution, order types, mobile stability
- Support: response time, whether there is a local contact point
Each check gets a pass, a caution, or a flag. A caution is not a failure. It is something you need to price into your decision.
Where AvaTrade Sits
AvaTrade has operated since 2006 and describes itself as regulated by MAS and ASIC. Those are real supervisory regimes with capital and conduct rules. A Ugandan account does not sit under Ugandan supervision.
| Check | Finding | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Founded | 2006, Dublin | Long track record |
| Regulators cited | MAS, ASIC | Supervisory rules apply |
| Uganda CMA licence | None shown | No local recourse route |
| Max leverage (UG) | Up to 1:400 | High, enforce your own limit |
| Min deposit | USD/EUR 100 | Standard entry |
| Base currencies | USD, EUR, GBP | No UGX account |
There is no AvaTrade office in Uganda and no CMA authorisation. The CMA (Amendment) Act 2016 created a licensing category for online forex brokers, but CMA's licensed firms list contains no such broker today. Retail forex is legal here, just not locally licensed, so Ugandans onboard through the international website.
The Cost Check
A spread-only model hides cost in the quote rather than the ticket, which makes comparison harder, not easier.
| Item | AvaTrade figure | Cost on 1 standard lot |
|---|---|---|
| UKOIL spread | From 0.7 pips | About USD 7 |
| Forex commission | None | USD 0 |
| Inactivity fee | USD 50 after 3 months | USD 50 if idle |
| Overnight swap | Varies by pair | Deducted daily |
| UGX conversion | Broker rate applies | Adds to real cost |
The 0.7 pip figure is a starting point, not a promise. During the London-New York overlap, which lands around 15:00-19:00 EAT, spreads are wider. That is normal across the industry, and it is why we log spreads at three separate times of day rather than one.
The inactivity fee deserves a flag. USD 50 after three months of no login is a real number. If you open an account and step away, that charge lands before you trade again.
Swap-free accounts are available for traders who need them. Uganda's population is roughly 14% Muslim, and there is demand for riba-free structure. Swap-free usually means the cost moves into a wider spread or an administration fee. Ask which, in writing, before you fund.
Funding and Withdrawal
Deposits to offshore brokers from Uganda run through MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money as the dominant rails, plus bank wire and Visa or Mastercard. AvaTrade supports card, bank transfer and e-wallets, and UGX deposits via MTN MoMo are reported.
| Method | Typical speed | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| MTN MoMo | Minutes | UGX in, USD credited |
| Card | Instant to hours | Watch FX markup |
| Bank wire | 1-5 business days | Fees on both ends |
| E-wallet | Minutes to hours | Check wallet fee |
Accounts are USD, EUR or GBP denominated. There is no UGX account, so every deposit carries a conversion. That conversion is a cost line, and it is the one most traders never calculate. Uganda's capital account is open, so funding an offshore account is not restricted, though banks apply AML and source-of-funds checks on larger transfers.
You Control the Risk, Not the Law
Leverage of up to 1:400 is the biggest number on the page and the least understood. At 1:400, a 0.25% adverse move consumes your entire margin on that position. Nothing in Ugandan law caps this, so the discipline has to come from you. Set your own ceiling, 1:20 or 1:50 if you are starting out, and ignore what the platform allows.

Offshore accounts carry a second structural risk: no local regulator. That means complaint resolution depends on the broker's own process and on the regulator where your specific entity is registered. It is a reason to prefer brokers with strong supervision, segregated client funds and a documented complaints route.
Third, tax. Uganda taxes residents on worldwide income, so profits from an offshore broker are reportable. URA treats regularly earned forex and CFD profit as business income at progressive resident rates, with a 40% surcharge above UGX 120,000,000. Get a TIN through URA eTax before you assume this is a later problem.
Is AvaTrade regulated in Uganda?
No. The Uganda-specific record shows no Capital Markets Authority of Uganda licence. AvaTrade is described as regulated by MAS and ASIC. Your account sits under the international entity, not under Ugandan supervision.
What is the maximum leverage for Ugandan clients?
Up to 1:400. Uganda sets no retail leverage cap because no local licensing regime is active, so the broker decides. That is high enough to erase an account on a small move.
Does AvaTrade charge commission on forex?
No commission on forex. Cost sits in the spread, starting from 0.7 pips. There is also a USD 50 inactivity fee after three months without a login.
Can I deposit with MTN Mobile Money?
Yes, UGX deposits via MTN MoMo are reported for Uganda. AvaTrade also supports card, bank transfer and e-wallets. Accounts are held in USD, EUR or GBP, so a conversion applies.
Where the Sensible Line Sits
The line is not "offshore versus local." It is how much unverified risk you are willing to carry for a given spread.
Keep AvaTrade on your shortlist if you want a broker with a track record back to 2006, supervision under MAS and ASIC, spread-based pricing from 0.7 pips, MT4, MT5 and cTrader, and MTN MoMo funding. You accept that no Ugandan regulator stands behind the account, and you compensate by keeping leverage low and withdrawals regular.

Look harder at alternatives if your position sizes are large, if you need a formally recognised local complaints route, or if you want an entity supervised by a tier-one regulator with a published compensation scheme. In that case compare brokers on segregation of client funds, the specific entity name on your contract, and the clarity of their fee schedule. Those three checks separate a solid international broker from a thin one faster than any rating.
Run one live trade at minimum size. Print the statement. Reconcile the spread, the swap and the conversion by hand. That number, not this page, is your final review.
